In an effort to compare two ~6" color display chartplotters, the Raymarine 435i and the Navman 5600, our decision has distilled down to daylight visibility and antenna type variables. The Raymarine is boasting great daylight visibility, however, since a dated review in Practical Sailor, Navman has claimed an revised display with much improved dyylight performance. The 435i offers an internal (built-in) antenna, which would enable reasonably quick removal from the helm for storage. The Navman requires an external antenna (included). I have not found a dealer with both models in stock to allow a side-by-side comparison. Any input, remarks or criticism regarding these two products would be appreciated.

goto this site

and you'll be able to see both units. www.marine-electronics-unlimited.com look under the manufacture for raymarine go there and then in search type 345i and it will pop up, the Navman5600 is under Navman. happy hunting, I'm getting the Standard Horizon 155c nice unit great price.

What prompted your choice of Chartplotter

I too am looking at Chartplotter and have reviewed most of them. The Garmin 182C looks good for a good price as well.

Great color

I compared the Garmin 178C,and both the 155C & 175C Standard Horizon side by side, and the color and clarity was so much different. It was around the time the sun is just going down and was shining in the store window. I could't find a better price any where, and SH is also giving a rebate.I have a Garmin76 now and just wanted to up grade, everything with electronics will change again by the end of the season so I'll get this unit and keep it fo awhile.

Another vote for Standard Horizon

I purchased a Standard Horizon 170C (175C is the newer model) last spring and will echo that it is very easy to read at the helm in any kind of light. I spent a half a day at the Toronto International Boat Show comparing brands in my price range for ease of use and for quality of charts in cruising areas in which I am familiar. There was no question about it the Standard Horizon and the C-MAP electronic chart was better for me in my area. The interface is such that II could without coaching do all the major functions (and I have not had a chart plotter previously but did have a Garmin 12XL GPS. I too was ready to upgrade to a Garmin chart plotter but found the interface, display and charts on the Standard Horizon more to my liking.

Go for Standard-Horizon!

I have had a SH plotter since the start of last season and can't say enough good things about them. The interface is VERY intuitive. I have only had to get out the manual to figure out how to dim the display at night. The prices are real good, just do some comparison shopping online and long with the rebates you'll get a real steal of a deal.

Standard Horizon

For what it's worth, Standard Horizon, IMO, is an excellent company. I bought a used Oday 25 in September 2003 and last year began having trouble with the depth guage. I had no manual, so I emailed SH and explained the problem. They sent a manual at no charge, and flagged the page that had instructions to solve the problem. With that kind of support, I'll go with them every time.

Raymarine 435 Chartplotters performs well

I purchased a new boat last spring with a raymarine 435 chartplotter with an external antenna and it has performed well. The display is first rate. Initially, I had a problem but it turns out the dealer installed the GPS Antenna incorrectly. After that problem was solved it has performed great. No experience with the NAVMAN Chartplotters. Thanks, Tom

Chartplotter

Last year I bought the 435i -- I love it! The thing that sold me was that one chip covers from NY to the SC border, including the Chesapeake bay and a portion of the Atlantic. Can be read in bright sun, but only 16 colors.

These two plotters were ...

... the result of a budget/display size analysis. My 20/20 uncorrected reading vision has suffered through the 40's aging process requiring that I wear a pair of +1.75 drug store glasses anytime I want to interrupt something in the 15"-20" range. Couple this phenomenon with a $1K max budget and you arrive at chartplotters with ~6" diagonal color screens. All my instruments are Raymarine and have performed flawlessly. Navman, though normally sold in the $800-$900 range is offering a $175 rebate netting its cost to less than $700. Color and direct daylight visibility are mandatory needs. I sail in San Francisco bay. Regardless of which chartplotter I consider, if an internal antenna is available, I’m seeking opinions on its use vs. an external version. Thanks for all the replies so far.

Is a big plus and I have not seen any issues with it. On my 320 I mounted it on my pedistal, it works fine.

Pedistal Bracket

The manufacturer of the pedistal makes a bracket, but if I had it to do over I would have made my own, it was expensive. I drilled into the pedistal and ran the wire thru it, drilled in the deck and ran it over to the power panel. The 435i comes with a bracket that now sits on top of the pedistal bracket I bought. Works great. Oh, I also bought some rubber gromets that I put into the holes I drilled, just to protect the wire.

Pedestal Bracket

I purchased an Edson pedestal guard plus a Navman 5600 and installed them myself last month. For the guard I followed Edson's directions but for the Navman to be mounted on it was more tricky. I eventually bought a piece of 1" Cherry wood cut it to fit just inside the guard ( 8"x5") and gave the wood some 8 coats of varnish - that was the easy part , however I spotted 9" x 1" straight stainless steel tangs in West Marine, purchased two plus a 6" open body turnbuckle. At home I bent each tang to a J shape and drilled 3 hole in each. 2 to attach to the Cherry and one for the turnbuckle jaws. On board I fastened these all together, slipped it over the Edson guard and proceeded to windup the turnbuckle. Worked superbly and looks great. Good luck with your project. Terry, SV British Jade
