The clutch on my Raymarine 7000 series autopilot sometimes fails to engage when my 2005 H44 is heeled to port. (no problem without heel or heeled to starboard.) I can force it to engage by rapidly jerking the wheel back and forth.
Any thoughts on how to fix it?
I am recluctant to send it back to Raymarine because 1) it is hard to remove, 2) they want me to send all the autopilot electonics as well even though I am 95% sure the problem is in the mechanical drive unit (since jerking engages the clutch), and 3) the problem is intermitent and only occurs when heeling to port so they might claim it's not broken.
