Raw Water Strainer

I recently purchased a 1979 H33. Aside from all the other projects I've created for myself, I now notice that the strainer for the raw water cooled engine has been bypassed. The old strainer is in pieces. Any recommendations for the size, make, model of a new strainer I should put in place? By the way, does anyone know an easy way to determine whether my Yanmar is a 2QM15 or a 2GM15. No engine plate exists. Thanks!

Try this

Go to the ships store, which routinely carries several sizes of raw water strainers. Not because they fall apart, like yours, but because they fall overboard. marinedieseldirect.com has a complete Yanmar site that can help you ID which make. You can probably email them as well to ask.

Look on the Starbord side of the engine

If it is a 2QM 15, the data plate for the engine is right below the fuel lift pump on the starboard side of the engine - it will have data on it that will tell you what sort of engine it is, and if it is a 2QM 15, that the max rpm is 3000. My 1980 33 did not have a raw water strainer on it from the factory, as near as I can determine, other than the bronze inlet strainer on the through-hull. I'm still running it that way, although I think I should have one - the only time it got stopped up I backflushed and fixed the problem.

Ditto WildBill and..

My 1979 '33 is a 2QM15 too. If I'm not mistaken, the QM is a raw water cooled, and the GM is fresh water cooled. (I could be wrong though)

Ernie, FYI

Ernie: FYI. The GM engines also are make in a raw water cooled version a fresh water cooled 2 cyl would be a 2GM20F a raw water version of this engine would be a 2GM20 (without the F). Same goes for the 3GM... I believe that the QM was a heavier engine. Do not know if that equated to heavier duty.

Your parts list.

See Related Link for 2QM15 parts. But you will have to call or write for strainer number. Your 2QM15, like my 2QM20, also came in an 'F' model which is 'F'resh-water cooled. Those boats came equipped with a strainer. Seems like the strainer would be more important with a non-'F' since the water is going from under the boat directly through the engine. My 'F' model came with the Perko strainer seen here: http://marineengineparts.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page86.html

a decent sized groco or similar

You should have a strainer. BoatUS/West/Defender/et al will carry them. Figure out what size you need - what size is there is a good start - and buy the one at the best price. I have a 79 37 cutter, and had to replace several strainers. They tend to be really hit by electrolysis due to the running water, and the fact that they aren't usually tied into the bonding system. The Groco's come with an electrical connection point for this very purpose. The good news is that everyone carries them, the bad news is that they aren't cheap.
