Hi - owner of an '87 Catalina 30 Mark II. I am installing a 3.5" diameter bronze scupper at the exterior raw water intake hull opening. Should I be concerned with drilling into the fiberglass?? Very short screws recommended? Thanks.

Why are you doing that?

Many folks have found that if you do that it becomes HARDER, not easier to clean out the raw water intake. Many suggest installing a T inside the boat, so that you can use a dowel from the inside to clean out the raw water intake.

Those bronze/marelon intake "strainers" will only trap more debris. The factory installed raw water intake thru hull fitting is flush with the bottom and will suffice for sufficient water requirements. However, these intake "strainers" are available as a single unit comprised of both the thru hull and exterior strainer components, thereby eliminating drilling into your hull, which is something I would not care to undertake.
