Raw water pump impeller gasket

I recently changed the impeller on my Fischer Panda generator on my Hunter 41. It only comes with one paper gasket and it did not seat correctly (my fault) and then once it gets wet, it's useless. My question is can you use some other type of gasket, such as "Form-A-Gasket" or something similar? Does this stuff which comes in a tube seal well and does it come off easily when it's time to do the job again? I hate the thought of buying another impeller replacement kit just to get the gasket. Any thoughts? This would also apply to any engine but in my case, my inquiry is limited to the genset. Also, does it matter which way the vanes are turned when you install the impeller? A delivery boat captain told me it doesn't matter, they will seat themselves properly once the engine is started.

Should Be OK

The auto gasket tube should be OK just make sure its the silicone type which seals very well and can be removed easy and I think its blue. The impeller I would let some one tap the start and stop real fast and see which way it turns than set the impeller that direction. Which model panda do you have,I have the 4200 panda. Nick

I have the 6000 ND

Nick, Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the help. I have the 6000 ND. My impeller kit came with a large o-ring and 2 bushings/washers, a few replacement screws and a couple of gaskets but different than what I use, but no instructions. I'm not sure what everything is for. The old impeller was so badly fried and in many pieces that I couldn't figure out what's what.

I don't know what your gasket

looks like, but I think you ought to be able to buy regular gasket paper from an auto store and cut out a new one. It doesn't have to be pretty, it just has to seal two surfaces. I also don't think it matters which way the blades of the impeller seat themselves when you change it. They will sort themselves out easily once the engine is running. Squirt some eco-friendly dishwashing liquid in the pump after you change the impeller to lube it when it starts up. I used to think it important to get the blades of the impeller in the raw water pump of my Yanmar 2GM20F the "right" way when changing it. But one day I had the entire pump off, replaced the impeller and then spun the shaft in both directions. The impeller easily set and reset itself depending on the direction of rotation of the shaft.

Most effective gasket paper $$ - wise

is a paper bag from the supermarket. When you have some time, like on a rainy Independence Day, make a few and keep them with your impellers on their own shafts for quick replacement. I've been doing this for years (Oberdorfer 202M15 pump on an M25 Universal).
