Raw water intake thru hull

Got a question that I probably already know the answer. My boat went in the water today . I went down to check it when I noticed a little bit of water by raw water intake thru hull not much not even a 2 oz cup full.,I didn't know where it was coming from so I whiped it down then did what I had to do. Came back noticed a small drip coming from under the wooden backing plate to the raw water intake thru hull . Got some life caulk put a bead around it sealed it up. It stopped the drip no more water . I probably already know the answer I need to have the boat hauled and replace the thru hull and reseal it. What does anybody think?

Yes, you must. The caulk seal may keep the water out of the bilge but it won't stop the water from sitting between the hull and the wood backing plate and rotting it. The water pressure from wave banging may cause the caulk seal to fail as well at 04:00 in a seaway.
But hey, you might make another year without a problem! :yikes:

It could easily be that the leak has been there a long time and it's progressively getting worse because the wood backing is rotting and giving way underneath. Certainly take care of it at the next haul out. How good is your bilge pump and battery?

In addition to what Ken said, if it is getting worse over time, you might be just noticing it now because the wood was dry. After a few days in the water it might swell enough that it wouldn't show the leak anymore.
