I noticed at the end of last year that my raw water intake pump had a little drip leak. It has a new O-ring with new impellor...do these pumps go bad and if so, are they repairable?

Is the drip from between the face plate and main body or is it coming from between the pulley and main body?

These are Johnson pumps and since you say you have an o-ring instead of a paper gasket, then engine is probably an European Yanmar(Like mine).

How many Hours on the engine?

My pump bearings and seal was leaking on my 3ym20. Believe it or not I was told by my Yanmar mechanic here in South Jersey it was cheaper to replace the whole pump. It came in a sealed bag with pump body and bracket with a new belt wheel already mounted.I would have expected to pay the same amount for a rebuild.

@joker460 - I have about 590 hours on the engine. The leak is so slow that I wasn't able to tell where it was coming from...

Most likely leaking from the seal. 590 hours is not that much time but that would be over 12 years. And you run salt water through it as opposed to mine which is only fresh water.

If you are mechanically inclined or know someone that is , you can purchase the re-build kit.

For example Torrenson http://shop.torresen.com/marine_die...i2&ident=308435&spnum=K28270-42000&name=Water Pump Rebuild Kit, 2GM, 3GM, 2GM20, 3GM30, 2GML, 3GMLE&image=yl.gif&multi=5

has the kit for under $100.00.

A new pump will be $400 plus.

You may not need the whole kit if your bearings are still good and there is no play. That site above also gives you a price for individual parts.

I scanned the attachment

Good Luck

I am leaning toward a rebuild...like you said 12 yrs old and in salt water. Better safe than stranded!

Hi Guys

for my GM30F - I got a new Johnson pump all the way up here in Pacific Northwest for $200. I think they they come from Depco Pump in Forida. Have your local mechanic order one. What gave it away for me is I visited a local Yanmar rep and they did not stock it, and they suggested I 'look around'.

good luck

Gord

Good find Gord.

Looks like Page 124 Catalog 110 #128377-42500 Johnson #10-24509

Yanmar GMF YEU (European)

Update:

Email Back from Depco Pump
Johnson #10-24509-01 $211.53
Johnson #10-24509-02 $223.53
They say the -01 has slightly higher flow.
I would have thought the more expensive one would be higher flow??

Both in stock

http://www.depcopump.com/catalogs.htm

Torresen Marine also sells the complete pump assembly
$237.98 - $250.97

OK working on the pump and have it all apart and it looks like the water seal is shot. Question: how the heck do I get it out of the pump body? I am afraid to pull/pry too hard and damage the housing or some other unforeseen part....

When you assemble the pump or change the gasket, coat it liberally with petroleum jelly, I find that my unit has not deteriorated because of this practice. the unit is original and is over 10 years old and it looks like new.

I replaced the gasket and it only cost $6. Tested it and it works without a drip!!!!

It took me longer to convince myself to try the rebuild than it actually took to do the work. $6 and probably .5 hours for the whole job. Not bad and beats buying a new one for $200.

At a local marina shop. I am assuming they may have ordered it from Yanmar. I am sure http://www.torresen.com/ will also have it. Just make sure you know which pump you have, mine was 10-24509-01.
