Raw Water Intake 1987 S2 9.2c?

Can someone explain to me what I am looking at, at the raw water intake under my boat? While diving to clean and inspect the boat bottom I have cleaned around the raw water intake but can't figure out how it works. It appears to be a rectangular box with what looks like two small anodes mounted to it's rear. The engine is picking up water while running but I can't see any points of entry into the box while swimming on the bottom so I am somewhat perplexed as to how it works. I just bought the boat several months ago and have not had it pulled out of the water yet. Can someone familiar with this system on my 1987 S2 9.2c please explain this water pickup and how it works?

I just have a bronze intake with slits in it. Yours should be similar. For now just find the slots and clean them.

That's my concern - I can't find any slots. The engine is picking up water fine so I expect there must be some door or something. Anyway, I was hoping someone out there might be familiar with what I have on the boat. I note you have an 87 and don't have such a device so this may be somthing that someone added along the way. I might just have to get in the water with the engine running and see how the water is actually getting picked up. I just want to make sure that there are no obstructions due to growth.

There are also others that are square with slide out screens. They are more for high speed applications.

I will have to go down again and see if there is a screen that instead of slots like I am used to seeing on most pickups.
