I just wanted to pass on this information:

For a Catalina 30 MKii with the Universal M25 XP the Globe #610 impeller is the right fitting raw water impeller for that engine. This is a run-dry impeller and it tends to last a lot longer than the other impellers. You can buy this from:

www.defender.com

Or use this hot link:

I think that I have about 200 hours on mine and I am going to replace it this year for good measures.

Thank you for that.

I just changed mine out, and have it in my head that I would simply change them every year. Take the old out, keep on board for the spare, and put a new one in.

Overkill?

In addition, I will change the primary and secondary filters as well, plus oil and filters. I figure if I do that once a year I should be good. No?

As usual, great information here.... thank you for that link.

I thought I read somewhere that these "Globe" had a tendency to fail. Maybe one of Mainsail's?

Um....I have put 200 hours on my current one. My Uncle put over 200 hours on the one in his Catalina 34.

These are good impellers and have a good rep.

Has anyone had problems getting the retaining clip back on the shaft. After I replaced the impeller, I couldn't get the clip back on without pulling the shaft out, and have read this is a bad idea. Would seem you don't really need the clip anyway, but not sure. Advise?

I may be a little late on this discussion. I replaced my impeller and bought several spare parts: impleller, retaining clips, gaskets and an extra set of screws for my Oberdorfer water pump on my 1980 25 hp universal. Note the attached link for parts and helpful support.

I did find out the hard way several key points. Using the right thickness gasket or one at all is critical to clearances and seal requirements. Check alignment for gasket and cover due to only one pattern is correct. Pulling the shaft appears OK and it seems easier to reinstall the impellar. Rotate clockwise as you push the assembly in place. The retaining clip needs to be installed for proper installation. OH YEA!! Make sure to reopen the valve to ensure water flow before running engine.

I guess I'm late too..

Hi All,

These two quoted posts were from another forum but I thought it important enough to quote and post here.

I was removing the sea water impeller from a M25 this morning . I do it each fall after haul out. To my surprise the impeller was cracked on every vane. This impeller was new this spring. The one I took out was a rubber type and was still like new but was old so changed it out . This is a # 815 . I would say there are only 35 hours on this impeller.

I will be taking it back tomorrow. Also going back to rubber type (black)

Sorry the pics are not the best

I have been using the Globe Blue Run-Dry™ Impellers for years and I have been very happy with them. I usually remove them at the end of the season and they look almost new with a little discoloration. This year every single blade was cracked. I did notice that this year the center appears to be plastic rather than metal like the older ones. Here is a picture of the impeller I removed today after 1 season (about 120 hrs). It has never run dry.

It appears that they have changed materials and that these impellers are now junk. I guess I will be going back to the black ones also. Too bad they had a good product. I was considering using their motor mounts but I think I will look elsewhere.

For years I was questioned, called to the carpet & told it could not happen about my Globe impeller failures. I finally stopped talking about them.

Personally I found the Globe impellers to be no longer lasting than the factory impellers, more money and I actually spun the hubs out of three of them. A spun hub is a tough one to trouble shoot the first time because when you open up the pump the impeller looks fine but the hub will actually spin within the impeller. The next failure the tolerances were off ever so slightly and she would not "prime". Put a factory impeller back in and she pumped fine.

Three pump gaskets later and I finally figured that one out. Globes response............. none....

Though they did not crack like the ones above I did have one that also cracked a vane by the end of one season. It was a long time ago that I stopped using them so it seems not much has changed with the QC? I now personally stick with factory impellers.

Failures like that could endanger lives if the boat was in peril and really needed the engine. This is not to say factory impellers are the be all end all, they're not, but neither are the Globe impellers.

I think it goes without saying but check your impeller if you replaced it with a Globe brand unit as something in the compound has obviously gone awry..
