Came across this old newspaper article from 1903 when searching for something else about City Island (scroll down, it's in the left column half way down)... Though a few of you old salts on here may have been around to remember this Americas Cup controversy :stirthepot:...

I believe the theory at the time was to keep the sail maker from making sails for the challenger(Lipton in Shamrock III) on this side of the pond.

Remember that Shamrock III had to sail to New York to compete and they wanted fresh sails for the race.

The book "Temple to the Wind" details the events leading up to the 1903 America's Cup when it was widely thought that technology and the courts had taken over the race. Sound familiar?

BTW, I highly recommend the book. It also contains a bio of Captain Nat and a lot of info on Lipton.
