Rat's love

Had the same problem.Called an exterminator he said they don't do boats. But gave me great advice . Go to home depot get large traps ( the old wooden kind with the spring ) Put a chunck of a Slim Jim on It . Removed the two dead rats the next day. They love Slim Jim's . Next step put screen on cowl vents , seal openings . The next step is inportant show bodies to admiral if you want her to spend the night on the boat again. Rob

Bucket of glue

We would buy the glue thats used on sticky boards in a gallon can. You pour vegetable oil all over your hand and then reach in and grab a wad and pull it out and spread it on a substantial board of your choice. I don't remember where we bought it. Snap traps are the most convenient, but don't handle them alot, or wear gloves so they don't 'smell a rat'. They can indeed be clever little guys, and get thru openings very small.

Here is the good news

They are good luck. Remember rats are the first ones to leave a sinking ship!

The best mouse trap

Get a five gallon paint bucket, a 2x4, a soda can, a length of stiff wire, and some peanut butter. Make a hole length wise through the soda can. Put the wire through the holes in the can. Streach and attach the wire with the can across the top of the paint bucket. The soda can should spin freely on the wire. coat the soda can with peanut butter. Fill the bucket with 6" of water. put the 2x4 on the edge of the bucket to the cabin floor. like a ramp to the top of the bucket. The mice or rats will climb the ramp, try to jump to the can and fall in the bucket, and drown. This trap never needs resetting and works great. My friend uses it in his cabin in the mountains and catches 6-12 mice in the winter. If you email me I can send a drawing of the trap. it is easy and you don't have to keep checking it all the time.

CO2

Try this. Get a large cannister of CO2, seal the boat, and open the valve. Leave it for a day or so and everything that breathes should be dead. The gas shouldn´t hurt anything else. David King ¨Molly¨

No Ferrets!!!

My daughter had a couple and they are very destructive. Get the marina to clean up it's act. As long as you have a population of rats at the marina they will find a way onto the boats.

Shane's idea is good

I only want to add, use a metal bucket. The critters can climb a plastic one. Also you should use glycol/water mix or the "pink stuff" to avoid freezing there in NYC. This trap also works with corn floating on the water instead of the peanut butter can. David's CO2 method would also work, but then you have dead rats where you can't find them, but you could smell them. Best of luck, Bryon

Mouse Trap water

The mouse trap described by Shane is also known as the "Maine Mouser". I have one out in my shed right now. They are used in Maine in the hunting cabins that are left unoccupied at certain times of the year. If you are in colder climes, as you are, skip the water part in the bucket and put antifreeze in there instead. It will stay liquified and give a quick death to the dirty rats!
