I just bought a 1998 321 and it was all rigged when I picked it up to sail back home, however, during the trip, when we were in port, the double backstay would start vibrating as soon as a small wind would pick up. I have tried many things to stop this but it is still going on, this vibration come directly over the bed and makes it next to impossible to sleep if it is windy. Any possible solutions? Thanks JEan Mourant "Sonsie"

It may be the boom

It may be the boom and not the backstay. Next time it's doing it try releasing some of the tension on either the mainsheet, vang or both. If either are too tight on my Benny 361 we'll also get a similiar harmonic tone out it.

Rig tuning

I have a 321 also, and I can confirm what Mike says. Its probably the mainsheet system or the vang. Mine will get a harmonic vibration in it sometimes too. Tighten or loosen either or both and you'll probably solve the problem. If it IS the backstays, your rig is likely too loose. If you're not knowlegeable on rig tuning, have a local rigger do it for you. Beneteau will not provide any guidance on rig tuning. Tim

Topping lift

On my 321 it's the topping lift that loves to "sing in the wind". I use a bungee cord on the topping lift about a foot above the boom and secured to each backstay. This eliminates the song about 99% of the time and has the added benefit of preventing the boom from swinging to much when motoring. If it really is the backstays - the bungee system might work anyways - it's not that different from putting your hand on - if you pick the wrong place it just changes the harmonics. - if you pick the right place you can almost eliminate it. Thanks

I did loosen the backstay a bit and it stopped, I had it rigged when I bought it and I think it was to tight. Thanks for the help. Jean Mourant
