Time to buy a heater for the boat. Anyone have an opinion wheather a glass lined tank or a stainless tank is better?
Also 6 or 11 gal better need to do my homework before the Miami show

The Raritan I had basically fell apart in the boat from rust. This actually made it easier to remove. I replaced it with an Isotherm. The insulation in the Isotherm kept water hot for nearly 24 hrs. The Raritan kept it hot for maybe 6. Get the biggest that will reasonably fit. Can't have too much HW.

Looks like the ISOTEMP 40 might be the choice and suggestions on where the best deal to purchase would be appreciated

Thanks

Do yo run the 120V off an inverter or generator while on the hook?
Scott, that is probably too much amperage to pull out of an inverter or even a genset. The best way to make HW at anchor is to run the engine and let the heat exchanger do the rest.

Both. Learned the trick from a cruiser. I run the heater with the 2500 watt inverter and run the engine at the same time. It makes short work of heating water.

This sounds like a fun project ... I am going to have to research the heat exchanger. I have plenty of room to mount a 6 gal tank in my cockpit locker. The plumbing for the heat exchanger is something I don't envision yet ...

Engine is a 1GM with raw-water cooled (no exchanger).

... Looks like it's not so easy. It would require converting to a freshwater system.

hmmm ... I guess heating while on shore power would be the only option. I thought about one of those instant-heat systems and realized that would be useful only with shore power. I guess the advantage of the tank is that you have some limited capacity when away from shore power.

...Interesting reading on a Flicka 20 website describing the 1GM10 engine (trying to find something about heat exchange) ... it has a lot of ranting against Yanmar!

Aside from their pricing, I think they make great engines.
