peggy, i just installed a new raritan phii toilet. the bowl is above the level of the holding tank. the vents to the holding tank are clear. i have been keeping the intake thru-hull closed because we use freshwater to fill and flush. the tank is about 35 gallons. when we flush, we see evidence of some flow through the water ports under the rim of the bowl. there is a very foul urine odor at times. the outlet to the holding tank turns upward about a foot above the bowl, then down to a lower level. there is no evidence of backflow from the holding tank. the thru-hull inlet is on a vented loop. i opened the seacock yesterday and ran a lot of water throught the toilet. a couple of things i noticed that i would like your opinion on. the odor now seems to be gone. i could understand a foul odor comming from stagnant water in the hose due to the seacock being closed for a long time.....but we smell urine...whew!! also, we are not able to accumulate water in the bowl (convenient for solid deposit) it is not a problem, because we mostly use the shower head to fill the bowl, and only poop when we have to and are away from dock. my question is this. should this toilet allow the bowl to fill when in the "flush" mode like the wilcox head mate did? and...why has the oder seemed to have disappeared now the the through is open (but not using bay water).

Ammonia smell isn't necessarily urine...

Since the odor went away when you flushed out the intake, it had to be stagnant water trapped in it, between the top of the loop and the bowl. That the intake is the only possible source of water dribbling from the channel in the bowl is the other clue that was the source of your odor. No, your bowl should not fill when in the wet position (neither should your previous W-C Headmate either)...manual toilets are designed to push a bit more out with each stroke than they pull in to compensate for bowl contents. So it's working correctly.. Adding water with the shower head or a cup ahead of solids should be the only way to add water ahead of pumping. Btw...you did put the intake vented loop between the pump and the bowl...not in the line between the thru-hull and the pump?

factory condition

the factory had a line already installed between the pump and the bowl. i put the loop between the thru-hull and the pump....my reasoning was that if the seal or pump failed or was broken, the loop from the thru-hull would prevent sinking the boat. i guess i don't trust the pump. i could add another loop between the pump and the bowl...but why is it needed if the other one is there?

The intake vented loop is in the wrong place...

The factory doesn't install vented loops in toilets because they're not needed in every installation, only those below waterline. So it's necessary to replace the line from the pump to the bowl to add a vented loop. You don't need 2...just move the one you have. If you leave it where it is, it will interfere with the pump's ability to prime, reducing the flow of flush water or even preventing any at all. And btw...the installation instructions and drawing clearly indicate where the intake vented loop should go.

loop goes between pump and bowl

right, peggy? My little head-mate does the same thing as robert's PHII when the Y-valve is set to the holding tank. No discoloration when set to direct discharge. What's up with that? Looks like some discharge water is leaking through pump seal into intake chamber.

Yep...that's where it goes...

Does the head discharge hose run uphill toward the tank? If so, flush longer in the dry mode to make sure bowl contents make it all the way to the tank...and change your joker valve. However, pumping the toilet will cause any water in the head intake to seep a few drops into the bowl...I doubt if you're experiencing the toilet equivilant of "blow by" unless your toilet is really in desperate need of a rebuild.

new toilet

the toilet is brand new only one month in service....it must have been water in the intake hose, because for the last two days since i purged it, the smell is gone. thnx for the input, marine head plumbing is somewhat of a black art to me. it is good to have someone like you to advise those of us that are toilet impaired.
