Peggy enjoyed the book and found it helpful. My Hunter 30 has a First generation Compact Raritan Head. Parts seem hard to come by off the shelf and they seem to cost more in some cases than entire Jabsco heads. My pump assembly is showing some real age and I thought about replacing it but then realized I could by a new Jabsco compact for about the same price.

Is there really anything to be gained by rehabbing my existing head or would I be better off going to the more common Jabso.

Thoughts?

Les

I'm not Peggy and not even close to being as good looking as she is however, the answer to your question was designed by Peggy. My wife bought me for my birthday the entire lower unit and pump from Raritan FROM THIS SITE! A romantic gift. It's much cheaper then buying a whole new Raritan PH compact. And you use the bowl and seat from your old Jabsco unit.

And Peggy thought this through A local marine service company installed mine and it works perfectly. Look for it in the store on this web site.

Hi Les,
I was just doing a search for info on the PHII unit, saved me a lot of time. I have a Wilcox that needs attention and can't find parts. Thank you and Peggy.

My problem is mine is a complete Raritan and the pump unit even here is as expensive as a Jabsco complete new unit. Actually tried mounting a Jabsco pump on mine last season and that's when I learned it wasn't a Jabsco.

At heart the question is is the Raritan enough better to justify the extreme difference in price?

The Raritan original series "Compact" manual marine toilet has been discontinued since 1991 - parts for it are few and far-between. Raritan's "Compact II" was also discontinued at the end of 2010, however most of the replacement parts for it will remain availalble for the forseeable future.

There are scads of earlier postings here from other boaters about the Jabsco manual toilet, most of which are not favorable. And there's also Peggie's opinion of them, stated on many, many of the earlier postings - there's a reason why the Raritan unit is more expensive...

You get only what you pay for - if you take the cheap way out, those will be the results you get.

The Raritan PHII and PHC toilets, if properly maintained, will last 20+ years. But proper maintenance is the key. I get calls all the time from people asking why this or that isn't working, why their toilet won't bring in water, or won't pump out water. When I ask how old it is, and the last time it was rebuilt; you'd be amazed at the answers I get. "Well I've had excellent use of it for the past 9 years, and now suddenly it isn't working right..."

"But have any of the consumable parts been replaced in all that time?" I ask.

Dead silence.

These are not household toilets with virtually no moving parts, that will last for 50-75 years before needing to be replaced. Marine toilets are basically nothing more than two pumps, that draw in outside water, then evacuate the toilet bowl and pump its contents to a remote location, usually a holding tank. The parts inside wear out and must be replaced periodically. The joker valve for example, should be changed every year; or at the outside, every other year. Seal kits should be installed at least every 5 years, and doing it at 3 year intervals would be even better.

I once knew a man who was an over-the-road salesman. He bought a new car every 3 years. During those 3 years that he had it, he did absolutely no maintenance on it whatsoever. He put gas in it and ran it. He'd occasionally check the oil and would add a quart every six months or so, and that was it! He claimed that it was cheaper for him to do it that way, than it was to do the routine maintenance on the car. Maybe it was cheaper for HIM, but I sure wouldn't want to be the next owner of that car...

The answer to that question is YES!!!

At heart the question is is the Raritan enough better to justify the extreme difference in price?
If you want to spend about $100/year for toilet pumps, buy a Jabsco...and in less than 3 years you'll have spent more than it would have cost you to buy the PHC base and pump that'll last 20 years if you just keep it lubricated and rebuild it (about $50) every 5-7 years.

Ok so now a question I should have asked much earlier on, how do I make sure which model I have so I can locate the correct parts, if I am write and this is compact I would the pump assembly from a compact II fit. My hope is yes then parts would be less of an issue. This is my second full season with the boat so if nothing else I assume the joker value should be changed but a lot of the screws on the head show signs of corrosion and if I try and open her up for a rebuild its always possible something will give before the screw does.

What you do is...

...Arrmed with the serial number of your toilet (it's on a plate somewhere on the pump or base NOT the bowl!) , call Raritan. 'Cuz that serial # will give Raritan all the info they need to make sure you get the right parts.
