Raritan CHT fitting?

Has anyone tried a to fit a Raritan CHT tank (it is a permanent fit which goes around the head when you don't have any other room)to a Jabsco Brydon head? Raritan says that it fits other similiar heads as their Compact 2. But I am a little concerned as the Jabsco's pump lever is on a bit of a slant and the Compact's are straight up and down and I don't know how much clearance there is at that point, it is hard to be sure by the drawings. Thanks in advance, Richard

If Raritan says it fits, it does.

If they don't mention a make/model specifically, call 'em ask 'em. However, you need to be aware that it only holds 5 gallons...and that a 5 gallon tank attached to a manual toilet holds about as many flushes as the smallest portapotty--if that many. IMO, you'd be better off replace the toilet with a 5-6 gallon permanently installed portapotty fitted for pumpout. Because it uses so little flush water, it holds about as many flushes as 12-15 gallon tank attached to your toilet. A tank wrapped around the bowl also extends far enough in front of the bowl to make sitting on the toilet very uncomfortable for most women and children, and most men too who aren't very long-legged. This tank is one of the few Raritan products I don't like. You say you don't have room for a larger tank elsewhere...you do, but depending on the size of your boat, it may be storage space you don't want to give up. Or, you're just not aware that your choices are not limited to the few rectangular tanks shown in the all the catalogs. Check out Ronco Plastics (link below)...they make top quality tanks and have more than 400 shapes and sizes--over 100 of which are non-rectangular.

Ok, but.....

Ok thanks, If I am able to put a small holding tank (10-15 gal) somewhere which system (porta potty with pumpout or toilet with holding tank) is less likely to emit odors if cared for, or are they the same. One other concern is, are you able to hook up something to flush the waste over the side (if tank is full) on a porta potty, I know on the normal holding tank you can put in a Y valve and do it. If you can't do it with a porta potty this seems to give the edge to a toilet with holding tank. Thanks in advance, Richard

'Pumpable" portapotty tank no different from

any other holding, except that--like the wraparound, it's a self-contained unit in the head. All tanks (except portable portapotties) fitted for pumpout OR dumping at sea must be vented--which odor elimination very easy...and any tank fitted for pumpout can also be dumped at sea...installing a y-valve and an overboard discharge pump in the pumpout line is no different from installing 'em in the pumpout line on any other tank. Whether you can legally do it or not is another matter. You must be at least 3 miles (up to 12 miles in parts of FL on the Gulf side) offshore to legally dump a tank, however...and that's not just 3 miles from the nearest shore in a bay, sound or lake, or anywhere in the Great Lakes...that's 3 miles out to sea from the nearest point on the whole US coastline. What size is your boat?

size boat

It is a Martin 32. So I only have to add a dicharge pump and Y valve for the portapotty, but if a use the toilet and a holding tank I can skip the pump as I can just use the valve and pump overboard, correct? Thanks, Richard

No...well, maybe

It depends on what you want to do. If the toilet is a self-contained system that can only flush into the tank, there are only two ways to empty it: pump it out or dump it at sea. To dump a tank--any tank, whether it's part of a self-contained system or separate--at sea, you'll need a pump and y-valve in the TANK discharge (pumpout) hose. However, if you install a separate toilet and holding tank, and if you have a choice between flushing into the tank or flushing directly overboard at sea, you only need a y-valve in the HEAD discharge hose that allows you choose between going into the tank or going out the thru-hull. Btw, you would not be able to do this if you install the Raritan CHT...it turns the toilet into a self-contained system. If you want to be able to do both, you'll need two y-valves...one in the head discharge However, I wouldn't put a portapotty, even a pumpable model, on a 32' boat. Go for either a decent sized holding tank, or better yet (unless you're in RI), install a Lectra/San (CG Certified Type I MSD that treats the waste to legal standards and discharges it overboard) instead of a holding tank.
