Can anyone point me to a source for information on Ranger sailboats? They are no longer made and I can find little info about them (quality, performance, etc.). Thanks for any help.

Practical Sailor has reviews in their archives on the Ranger 23, 26, & 33. You have to buy the articles, but I've found them pretty informative. I know one Ranger 23 either circumnavigated or nearly did with a 16 yr old skipper--subject of the book/movie "The Dove" Hope this helps... Fair winds...

Great Boats

I owned a 33. It was relatively comfortable and very fast bu a bit narrow. It was a good race boat. It had a lead keel enclosed in fibreglass. The Ranger 26 was also a very good smaller boat and it also had good race potential.

You might be interested in info on Gary Mull.

There are two articles about Gary Mull on the Newport pages. These articles give a brief perspective by the designer including the Ranger line. See attached link.

Ranger 23 owners

The Ranger 23 Owners' site is run by an avid owner called Arvel Gentry... try his site in a search engine. He is the definitive expert on Ranger 23. R-26 of same vintanges will be similar and also a great boat. BTW the R-23 is an absolutely super boat, designed as a true mini ocean racer (it is NOT a daysailer). Don't underestimate it! I almost bought one... twice. If I had not run across a Cherubini-designed Hunter with more room for less money I would be a Ranger 23 owner right now. JC 2

Which Ranger?

I believe I am correct in stating that there are two different Ranger brands of sailboats: the ones designed by Gary Mull and built in California, and the ones built in Kent, Washington. The Kent factory still exists (I visited there a couple years ago), but no longer builds sailboats. The plant now builds a line of fishing boats. There are fleets of Kent-built Rangers around the country, particularly in the Northwest. Notices of Ranger regattas appear occasionally in the Nortwest Sailing Magazine, "48-degrees North". The Mull-designed Rangers are no longer manufactured, either. I have good friends who own Kent Rangers, and another friend owned a Mull Ranger about ten years ago.
