The compression post ( supporting Mast ) is corroded at attachment located at keel. I want to replace the corroded compression post without de-masting . Is this possibable ? My idea is to temporary replace existing compression post with a four x four tember from keel to the top of compression post ( inside fiberglass top ) then remove existing compression post and install replacement. My situation is that I do not have any details on how the mast is attached to the compression post. 1. Can I replace compression post without de-masting ? 2.If yes, How ? Thanks fellow wind sailors.

response to compression post

I would first loosen all the standing rigging before attempting this, as the standing rigging has the effect of wanting to push the mast through the deck. I have done somthing like this to a ranger 26, except that I used a jack with a timber on top to releive the pressure on the compression posts. I now have a ranger 28 that I just started to rebuild. When I baught it I thaught that is was a keel stepped mast but after taking the mast down did I realize that it is actualy deck stepped with a few wires running up it. The electrical wires are also running up the compression post so you would have to cut them at the base pull the post then reconnect them. The Ranger that am rebuilding has no rudder I am interested in making a mold of another ranger 28 rudder or in getting some measurments. Any ideas?
