Ranger 26 - outboard size????

I have a Ranger 26 and the Johnson 8hp 2 cycle outboard is over 10 years old and I'm thinking of replacing it with a new 4 stroke. I was hoping to be able to fit a 8 or even a 9.9 hp Mercury or whatever in the transom cutout where my old 8hp is sitting but I understand that the 4 strokes are larger in size (and I know they are a lot heavier). Does any Ranger 26 owner have any info on this. What size of 4 stroke will fit??? Thanks, -Bruce

i have a nissan 9.8 4 stroke on mine and yes, it is big in the slot. you are going to have to learn about prop wash and use the tiller to maneauver in and out of the slip. coming into the slip , i idle in toward the area of the slip and put in neutral and coast ,then use the rudder to slip in. that way i am not heading in fast and have to reverse.
