Random thoughts about this delivery cruise I’m on

Hey everyone,

After 25 years of trailer sailing, we bought a Catalina 320 and are on a 400 mile delivery cruise. We bought the boat in Manitowoc WI, motored across a very calm and VERY foggy Lake Michigan, and are now harbor hopping our way around the mitten to our home port at the Tawas Bay Yacht Club.

I don’t really have a question, just want to make some observations that, in retrospect, all seem pretty obvious.

observation #1:
turns out we don’t control the weather.

Admittedly, not being used to the big lakes, and not being comfortable with the new boat yet, we stay at harbor when more daring (and/or more fool hardy) people might go out. But it’s been 9 days since we left Manitowoc, and so far we have only moved the boat 4 times. Manitowoc to Kewaunee, to Frankfort, to Leland, to Charlevoix. I had hoped to be in Mackinaw by now.

corollary to observation #1
The weatherman also does not control the weather.

When we left Frankfort we really believed we would have four consecutive travel days, turned out we had two. It’s beautiful today, but the wind is too much for us rookies. Tomorrow the wind and waves looks better, but it’s going to be cold and rainy…. Still making a decision on that one.

observation #2
If you buy a 30 year old boat, stuff is going to break

The guy at the Frankfort hardware store said, “You boat guys are always trying to MacGyver something together.”
I said, “Well, what I really need is a PEX 15mm to 1/2” (female) swivel elbow, you got one of those?”

Crazy glue and Teflon tape and duct tape and a hose clamp and we have hot and cold running water again.

Sometimes it’s the little victories. Let’s see if it lasts.

observation #3
just a mile offshore in northern Lake Michigan, it’s really cold

At first we packed for a little summer sailing excursion, sure … some long clothes “in case it gets cold.“ My friend suggested long John’s and wool socks and I thought she was crazy, but she has more experience than we do, so I packed long John’s and heavy socks (don’t have wool), and generally more heavy weather clothes. We have gotten used to pulling into harbor wearing pretty much all of our clothes, and looking over and seeing kids in the splash pad. It’s crazy that all of Michigan is under a heat advisory and we are out there freezing our transoms off as soon as we get out of the marina.

We are considering staying in Charlevoix for the cold and rain tomorrow, skipping Beaver Island, and making the 48nm run to Mackinaw City on Saturday in the sunshine. We‘ve done a 55 mile day and several 35 mile days, and we like the 35 mile days better, but Mackinaw City would make it feel like we were halfway home.

Anyway, so far we are still having fun. And being back in Michigan, we know that if we needed help, we have family that could meet us at any port.

You’ve got to take the time to smell the roses. We’re on a little longer trip than you but are planning on three months to see the sights.

sadly, we do have commitments back home.
we are trying to balance “taking our time and seeing the sights” with “get the dang boat home.”

honestly, it’s the first time in our lives we’ve had the kind of freedom to take an open ended vacation, and who knows when the next chance will be.

We are learning a lot and having fun,
it’s certainly a trip we won’t forget!

Lake Michigan is a fresh water ocean... well almost...

Keep having fun and good luck with the weather.

On a delivery, sometimes it is just about miles and time. We left Annapolis, MD last Saturday morning at 0630 and arrived at Catskill NY at 1400 today, that's close to 400 miles in 6 days and one night. When this delivery is over we will have gone from Annapolis to Fair Haven, NY on Lake Ontario in under 2 weeks. Take advantage of weather windows when they happen.

Observation #4
I bought a sailboat because I love to sail.

We are in Mackinaw City today, waiting for a thunderstorm to pass so that we can head out for Cheboygan (shortest leg of our cruise).

So far on this delivery cruise we have been mostly motoring. We opted for 9 hours under motor to cross Lake Michigan instead of 14 or 15 under sail for several reasons, time and lack of familiarity with the boat being the biggest ones.

mostly “moving the boat” has felt like work. Being stuck in a charming harbor town waiting out weather has seemed like vacation, but 9 hours listening to a diesel engine in the freezing cold has seemed like work.

yesterday we had perfect wind. Like the best I’ve ever seen. Waves flat to < 2 ft all day and PERFECT WIND.

50 miles under sail, rarely dipping below 6kts and occasionally flirting with 7.

THAT seemed like the vacation of a lifetime!

Hi John,

We did a similar delivery trip back in 2021 (St Joseph, MI to home in Washburn,WI, on Lake Superior). I wrote about it here:

I can relate to all of your observations --the temperature swings, the monotony of the motor, and the just plain tired you feel at the end of the day. When we did our trip I was thinking I would work some from the boat when we were under way--lesson learned -- it was just not a work environment conducive to getting much done when underway. Of course, as you noted, it also didn't really feel like a sailing vacation either. Like you we ended up motoring most of the trip. With all that, it was an experience that we'll always remember.

Good luck with the remainder of your trip and looking forward to future posts!

Doug

There is sailing and there is delivering and cruising. We are nearing the end of a year long 5500 nm cruise during which our sailboat mostly impersonated a trawler.

We often had wind, from the wrong direction, or too strong or not strong enough for the sails we had. So we motored. There are those who will sail no matter what. We passed a boat off the New Jersey coast making about 2 knots in 5 knots of wind, not for me.

Your experience is quite typical when confronted with the making miles or sailing dilemma, making miles usually wins. It is frustrating when there is a perfect wind for an afternoon sail, but it won't get you where you want to go in a time frame you can live with.

Meanwhile, enjoy the journey, that's what cruising is about, not the idyllic adventures portrayed by YouTube sailors. They just don't show the video of them motoring.

5500 miles!?!?

wrapping my brain around that number might take a minute.
It has taken a few years of sailing and cruising to work up to this. When I started cruising many years ago it was in a 22' boat and the 15 mile sail to the next bay over was an adventure.

This is our track, we haven't quite closed the circle, we'll do that on Wednesday or Thursday.

Nice discussion of your adventure. It is always an adventure when you decide to untie the lines and cross a Great Lake or go out onto a sea.

fair winds and safe return to your home port.
