Hi all. I'm installing a Garmin 3010c (10") chartplotter in a Navpod and it's taking up all my pedestal guard real estate. I need my Raymarine ST7000 autopilot at the helm too, but I have no place to put it. It's about 6" wide and about 4" tall, and needs to be flush mounted. Any creative suggestions?

Creative??

How about returning the 3210 and getting a 3206? A 3210 at the helm is like having a 40" plasma down bellow a little bit of overkill IMHO... Good luck!;)

Get a remote

for the auto pilot. I'm going to install a Ray wheel pilot this season and came up with putting the main auto pilot screen at the nav station and having a handheld remote at the helm.

RAD, Don't do it! The Raymarine remote likes to turn its self off and you'll need that display close by. I actually returned my remote because it was such a PITA! If you are in STBY mode the remote will shut down after a few minutes then it takes about 30 to 45 seconds to find the signal again. I spoke with Raymarine tech support and there is no way to over ride this feature. They were great about it and were actually the ones who insisted I return it. I'll buy one again when they get the bugs worked out..

3210 vs 3206

Dan, I ran into the same problem so I opted for the 3206. It is identical in features to the 3210 just smaller. Tim R.

It works fine on my 42 CC

If you look were Hunter puts the Autohelm on the 42 passage (on the back rests of the helm bench) it will give you plenty of room for the 3210 to fit on top of the insterment pod. I just installed the 3210 with XM weather and radar and it works great. I am able to un screw the screen (two side wing nuts) from the pod area when I am not using it as it.

I was gonna suggest you use a rail mount pod

sticking on the pedestal guard like a rear view mirror till I saw the price, see the link. I'd go searching at my local surplus store (Minney's) for something similar.

Thanks, all

I'm really grateful for all your thoughtful input. I hadn't thought about a number of these options. I really wanted a rail mount pod off the side of the pedestal guard, but Navpod doesn't make a wide one, just a square one. Edson does, but it's ugly and large....and expensive. I think I might look at mounting on the helm seat. I just need to make sure I won't lean back on it by accident. I also like the block of wood/rail mount option. I need to see how much room I have on the pedestal guard after I mount the navpod. If I can squeeze it in the arch above the pod, I may go in that direction. And I think I'll pass on the remote option, but it genuinely wasn't one that had even "remotely" occured to me. I can spend a lot less than 400 dollars on things that don't work well. I've got plenty of experience in that department ;o) So thanks again, all.

helm location

Fred Like you, I have my radar/chartplotter at the nav desk but only because that's where it was at it's not waterproof. I'm still waiting for it to die so I have an excuse to replace it at the helm. In fog, the radar is almost useless to me in the cockpit.

Thanks for the heads up about the remote, they just released a newer model the X5 series,I wonder if they worked the bugs out and even though my nav station is within a few steps away from the cockpit but maybe I should figure out away to mount the screen at the helm an save money for another goody.

I think I have a solution

I did some digging and found a pretty neat box I think I might be able to mount the autopilot in (see link). It has a weatherproof gasket. Then I'll get either a Ram Mount or some other sort of rail mount to attach it to the pedestal guard. The box is 8.25 L x 5.0 W x 3.0 D and the autopilot is 6.9 L x 4.53 W x 1.62 D. If it doesn't work, I'll go to plan B (as soon as I figure out what plan B is). Thanks again, all.

This may help

Below is a link to how I solved the problem. http://www.sailingseadragon.com/Instruments.htm The Raymarine 6001 head is about half way down the page. Good luck Garner
