I want to be able to raise the mast regularly and with one person on my 1986 Hunter23. I plan to trailer it back and forth and to different lakes. I'm looking for a good system to buy. I have been experimenting with my homemade ideas, and not happy with the results. Anyone know of any good products that can be bought and set up quickly? Tim tbrouter@gawab.com

mast

I don't know of too many ready-made mast raising systems for the 23. what you really need to make are a rolling rear mast crutch and solid or wire rope baby stays, with an attachment point in line with the rear pivot for the mast step. These 2 items are a must have. Then, you need the lifting power. One good place to start is the mast crutch - if you use a small winch, and can winch the crutch to make the mast stand up to about 30 degrees, You can really get away with having a 4:1 tackle attached to the jib halyard and simply pull it up. Otherwise, if you are starting from near horiztonal, you need a pole extending from the foot of the mast up about 6 feet. This pole also needs to be fixed so it CANNOT TURN SIDE TO SIDE. I do it myself with a rolling crutch and baby stays. I then hook the mainsheet to the bow, one end to the jib halyard and one end around a winch. I lift the mast from the back of the boat, take up the slack in the mainsheet, then start winching and up she goes.

Side sway

I used to have this boat and found that the side sway is the biggest problem. I found (do a search) for a system made of conduit and a loose collar. I also made a graduated rear crutch so I could get it off dead level to start, and then just tied a long line to the forestay, walked around the front of my car and pulled it up. Norse.
