You don't have too...

but the sail will not go all the way up unless you do in most cases...

Boom support

The topping lift (at the aft end of the boom) supports the boom when the main is down. Slack it when the main is up as the main will support the boom. Vang and mainsheet also will need adjustment. Boats are different...some will have to keep some tension on the topping lift, some will allow the TL to be completely loosened. Experiment. If you have in-mast furling, find the point at which furling is the smoothest & mark the TL at that point.

Nobody mentioned the outhaul or cunningham

You said tension singular and everyone is trying to guess which of the 5 tensions you are talking about. The mainsheet and the vang should be free running, the cunningham and the outhaul should have been eased before the last time you doused the sail and the topping lift should be just a tad longer than the distance between the end of the boom and the halyard shackle when the main is set to full hoist so you shouldn't have to touch that one at all.
