Raising the Main Sail

Usually the reasons for a tough hoist are dirty tracks, worn slides, worn sheaves or halyards that are too big; either from age or oversize selection. Also, make sure that you're going directly upwind when you do raise it and that there isn't binding on associated lines - reefing etc.

...even when you correct all that, it's a PITA. One help is to have a crew pull on the main halyard at the mast while you tail at the winch. However, a strong track or similar installation is one of the best ways to spend your $$$ on this rig, and if you are generous with yourself, a power winch as were optioned later.

Hunter Vision
I had the same problem with my Vision when I bought it. It was a reef line was stuck. Once I freed it, it went up fairly easy. So simple that it was one of the last things I checked.

We have a 89V32 no power winch. We have the same problem not able to winch it up,however it can be raised by pulling up at mast with no problems My wife does it all the time.If only Icould get the line to the winch without all the turns through the shives and blocks Life would be so much better Good luck.
Well we took her out for a shake down cruise yesterday and raising the sail at the mast was no problem.
So i am happy to say we are now the proud Owners of a 89 Hunter Vision 32 and appreciate all of your help and responses.

I have a 90 Vision 32 with an 18 v Milwaukee right angle (cordless drill) power winch handle. I had this exact same problem and it turned out that the battery needed to be replaced. I purchased a battery replacement on e-bay (~$30) and now there's more than enough juice to crank the sail up the mast from the cockpit.
The only difficulties remained slides that bind on the gate at the bottom of the track (which was easily repaired) and lazy jacks that get in the way, periodically. The other PITA is that the main halyard will occasionally deflect to the forward side of the mast (in choppy water) and catch on the lazy jack/mast connection. As long as I'm directly into the wind and 'quickly' raise the main, I have no problems with it catching.

And Yet Another Thing....
... I also took off all the slide webbing from the batten slides and re-attached them with slightly longer webbing. What that allowed is for the batten to twist without imparting so much torque to the slides. It helped out quite a bit. It is an all day job and you will pierce your fingers a few times, but it is a real cheap fix. Just keep a bunch of bandages in your pocket.:cry:

... and, don't forget to tighten the topping lift, raising the boom, taking all pressure and weight off the main.
