I have an O'Day 25. What is the easiest way to raise and lower the mast? Is there some trick, or just muscle it up and down?

Look in the archives

The archives will show a number of ways to do this. I have an extra lower pindle and attached it to a 2x4 that has a plywood "V" attached at the top. This is roped to the stern and I place the mast in the "V" and attach the rear pin on the step. I loosely attach the upper shrouds and the back stay. I then put my truck about 100 feet in front of the boat, attach the anchor rope to the hitch and the main halyard to that rope. After lifting the mast as high as i can, my wife takes up the slack, takes a couple of turns on the wench and cleates off the halyard. I then just grind her up, install the front step pin and the front stay. This has been the simplist and fastest way for me. After this, the adjustments for mast rake and shroud tension starts. Thats more tricky.

Wench?

Ric, I'm still trying to figure out how the wench figures into this procedure... ;)

mine has one

The side of my mast has a wench for raising the main or jib sails. I never use it for that. I have the jib halyard on the wench as if you were raising the sail, the end of the halyard is attached to my anchor rope and the end of that rope is attached to my truck, 100 feet away. I just grind away and up she goes.
