Raising Keel on a 240?

How difficult should if be to raise the Keel on a Hunter 240. I had a Hunter 23.5 and I could just pull the line and actually hear the Keel hit the hull when it was totally raised. I know I'm getting old but sometimes now I have to use the winch to get the Keel up on my 240. Is this normal? Any ideas anyone? Thanks DW

I have to use the winch on my 240 to raise the centerboard- I think this is normal. I don't recall hearing a thunk when it is up, but it is moving pretty slow at that point.

I think the original cascading block setup (using 2 single blocks) on the 240 uphaul is a 4:1 purchase, right? So replacing it with two double blocks (also 4:1) would not really help- but I may be wrong. Has anyone done that?

This happened to my 23.5 also. When I pulled the centerboard out to investigate I found the uphaul line had torn the outer braid and was not rolling on the roller. Instead it was apparently just sliding the outer braid up and down the core and binding at the roller. A new uphaul line cured this.

Dennis,
Sounds like that could be my problem. Thank you for the response. Do you know how far you had to raise the boat off the trailer or did you have a lift?
Thanks,
DW

After redoing my line,I now can raise it by hand and it clunks both up and down. I raised the boat off the trailer by using the jack under the hull, lower the trailer tongue method. I inserted spacer blocks between the hull and trailer bunks for safety. It worked for me!

Thank you for your input. I think this confirms my problem. How many inches did you have to raise the boat off the trailer in order to get the keel out?
Thanks,
DW

I'm guessing 18 to 24 inches. Sorry not sure, I had my boat up on crutches and blocks. It needs to be stable as some one will need to be inside to reinsert the bolt when it's lifted back up.

Also, not sure how similar the 240 is to the 23.5 but I found that the entire grip length of the bolt and hole must be well filled with sealant to prevent ballast tank water from leaking into the bilge.

Dennis;

Glad you posted the photos that showed you were using a lift vs. trying to raise the boat with a jack while still on the trailer. It shows you were using your head. Thanks.

Folks,

I have seen too much in my life time and even tried everything before anyone has posted here personally and as a dealer. I have and will always discourage suggesting to lift the boat with a floor jack, blocking it on the bunks and so forth just to get the centerboard or even a regular metal swing keel off or on while on the trailer BECAUSE IT IS DANGEROUS AND I HAVE SEEN MUCH INJURY TO INCLUDE MYSELF. In addition many folks are not experienced enough. If you insist and get hurt, I told you so.

As for the 240, it too uses the 7/16 inch line only and after replacing it usually cures the problem but adjustment must be made so you will the klunk sound when going up and down. I am asking for further information and will post if anything else is of importance.

Crazy Dave & Dennis:

Thank you for the great information and pictures. I will take Dave's advice and use a lift. I'm sure this will be a winter project, but Dave if you have any more info I would be interested, Thanks

With the keel fullup on the trailer, use a Sharpie and mark your line so you know its position without having to listen for a clunk.
