Raising Furling Jib on O'day 222

I need to know which is the proper way to raise the jib on my O'day 222. I have always raised the jib by just hoisting it straight up on the halyard. I have sailed the boat several times this way. Recently I sailed with a friend who suggested I should first clip the jib shakle to the forestay and then raise it. Which way is correct. Should it just hang only on the halyard, or should I clip it to the forestay? Either way it appears that it would stay hoisted pretty well. I just never thought of doing the other way?Thanks

I'd go straight up

Steve -Did your friend give you any idea as to why he's clipping the shackle to the headstay? This is not something I'd do unless necessary. The sail is cut so that the tension from the halyard lines up on the sail correctly when the halyard stands off from the stay. I'd leave it that way.Justin - O'day Owners' Wegb

Thanks for the advice, Justin. He didn't give any specific reason other than he thought that was the way to go. He also pointed out that you can see a bit of wear on the forestay right about where the shakle would sit if rigged that way in the past.I just thought I would ask around and see what the consensus was. I couldn't find any direct answers from O'day resources.Thanks again. -- Steve
