Back to the original question. I have a Mac 26s with a mast that's a 1' and 1/2 short. It's set up as a masthead rig including the shrouds. Last year I ran it as a fractional rig and bought a jib to fit. Now that it's masthead, I added a pendant (made from a length of halyard) that raises the foot of my jib about 14". This is fine as I have a little room at the top and still no contact with the mast on the leech.
It allows a much better view, my wife can layout on the foredeck etc. the only thing I would caution is that you may have to put some adjustment in your jib sheets so you don't loose the tension on the foot. I forget the name of the rig.
I don't know that I have upset the balance but I may have very slightly.
