Rainbow Chaser to be on the market

I've always said that they could sell Rainbow Chaser at the funeral. I thought it would be mine, but a friend died and we just bought his 40' Choey Lee Midshipman. The deciding we wanted the boat was easy. The friend spent a year going though it from end to end, added all the cruising equipment, got it in A 1 shape. 4 times the inside room, new Yanmar, high and dry center cockpit. No projects left to take on. Problem was, Rainbow Chaser has been such a part of our lives for the last 14 years, it was like selling a child into slavery. However, we've come to terms with that and are starting to attach all the delayed things we put off. So, I guess we've taken our last cruise on her and will move on. With mixed emotions.

I have bought slaves before

Just want to take the time to say "hi" again to you, your lovely wife and Rainbow. As of yet, i still havent been able to get in touch with my claims adjuster, seems like i'll just have to wait a little longer. Be that as it may.......can i ask on here how much are you asking? or you can call me next week when im back from offshore or you can e-mail me at sailortonyb@msn.com. I'm already convinced that i want a 37 hunter cutter. Tony

"Say it isn't so!!"

First Tom H., then Ron P., now Gene G.?!! What a sad state of affairs. Sure hope there is another Cherubini fan waiting in the wings. My first year dockmate(1999) has a Cheoy Lee. It is a really nice boat. It might be slower but you can't beat it for seaworthiness. And as you said, there is so much more room inside. You are really going to like her. When will we see some pictures? Do you consider Rainbow Chaser "finished"? Maybe I should buy her and sell Ladylove.

a couple pictures

Here are some pictures of the new-to-us Cheoy Lee: http://www.geocities.com/symmgruender/cheoylee.html As to finished? Never! However, I've started all the delayed maintainance and things I've put off. Like - the steering pedestal is now sandblasted and will be awlgriped soon. Most people sell their old boat before moving on. Somehow I missed that lesson, so I need to get it in gear to have her ready to sell - unless someone wants to take my to-do list on.

Ketch or yawl?

She's a beauty Gene. Can't let Linda see that aft cabin with a real mattress. It looks like a ketch but since the wheel is ahead of the mizzen would it be a yawl? What will happen to your Rainbow Chaser site? Those projects are invaluable to us Cherubini types. And what about the house and Chrysler projects? Are there big plans for the new boat? Maybe an ocean crossing?

Site will stay

I'll keep the site, and one of these days I'll have time to add more to it. The lessons don't go away when I sell the boat! As to the rest - well, I guess I'll have to live a long time - I've got a lot of projects to finish. The Cheoy Lee is a center cockpit ketch. I think the ketch/yawl question has to do with the mast/rudder relationship. We have yet to sail her, but I'm sure it will be fun. We've sailed past her in Rainbow Chaser and it was a bit like passing the Queen Mary! We did something most would recommend against. Bought her without a survey and without a sea trial. We'll let you know how it goes. We are getting a survey this coming week, but only because we have to for insurance.

Thanks, Gene

Your web site and your personal replies to my inquiries were invaluable when I was a neophite 37-c ownwer. All the trouble spots you highlighted were right on. I am sure you will really enjoy the Cheoy Lee, but your Cherubini Hunter buddies will miss you. Thanks. Jim Legere H-37C CALYPSO

The post purchase survey

First, I'd like to say I'm humbled by all the thanks I've gotten, both here and by private email. I'm glad the info I've posted has helped. And - I said I'd report when the post-purchase survey was done. I don't have the written final product in from of me yet, but do have a summery of what he felt was most important. "Some chain plate bolts were showing some rust". I'd mentioned this to him, and told him I'd planned to take each out and inspect them. He recommended that. "The teak deck needs some attention. There are better solutions for a deck" Again, I was quite aware and had already mentioned this. "Fire extinguishers are out of date". "A couple hoses need a second clamp." So, my survey turned up everything his survey did. Bottom line - mine was no good for insurance, his, at $475, was. Sea trials (as in 'go sailing!) comes in a week or so.
