My 1987 Hunter 28.5 has rainwater flooding problem in the quarter berth
and under engine pan after heavy duty rain. We have checked cockpit drains,
portholes, and cracks and screw holes. Any ideas where else rainwater might
find its way in?

Probably too obvious but if you have a keel stepped mast, rain water will enter your boat through the openings in the mast.

Thanks very much, Ted. Good idea. However its seems difficult to see that water end up
under the engine and in the quarter berth?

Try looking at the Beckson port for the emergency tiller under the helm seat. Mine had some grit in the grooves that prevented a tight, waterproof seat. Cleaned out the grooves and put some PTFE grease on the grooves and leak was gone.

Another thing to check is the channel drain under the hatch cover for the starboard lazarette. Make sure no leaves or other crud is living in there as that can force water into the quarter berth.

I found my phantom leaks finally. The life rail stanchions are thru bolted. They are abused by dock helpers to trying to pull my 13 Ton boat closer to the dock.

Hunter used 5200 to seal them. Years of abuse weakened the seal.

We followed your advice plus some other suggestions like readjusting the rub rail bolts, caulked stanchions, etc. Low and behold, the leaks stopped. Tks so much for sharing your expertise.
