Rail mount bracket for small outboard

When not attached to our inflatable dinghy, I need to mount a six hp outboard onto a bracket attached to our stern rail. I've purchased one of the plastic brackets from West Marine BUT then learned that the vertical rail (the bracket contains holes/paths for both the horizontal and vertical rails which intersect like a "tee") is not perpendicular to the horizontal rail. No doubt I could fashion one from wood by carving appropriate tracks for the rails, but I was hoping someone would know of a bracket that might fit. The vertical rail intersects the horizontal rail at something like 85 degrees instead of 90. Any suggestions? Thanks, Gary Kunkel Catalina 30 Folie a Deux

Gary, try Garhauer Marine. They make many products just for the Catalinas. I have bought from them and always been pleased with the service and products. garhauermarine.com

Outboard Bracket

Two squares of 3/4" waterproof plywood, of sufficient size and suitably sealed against the weather and having a horizontal groove routed a bit too shallow to make a good fit around the rail can be fastened together with four bolts (two above the rail, two below) drawn tight enough to flex the boards somewhat. This can exert a considerable pressure on the rail to keep the mount from turning. I use this system to mount a 6 hp to a 1" stern rail. Just be sure that you use the clamps to adequately secure the motor to the rail mount. As an added precaution, you might consider a restraining line from the lower end of the o/b to a ring or strap mounted to the toerail or deck directly below the o/b.
