Anyone have experience installing VHF in cockpit? Have been using my handheld in cockpit, but would prefer the power of regular radio. Also, anyone know where can find or fix the top of my binacle (1978 H33)...broke and keeps falling off. Anyone sell a original replacement? Thanks, Butch

cockpit radio

Installed a Standard Intrepid in the cabin with a RAM mike in the cockpit. works great - you can change channels, squelch, vol etc at the RAM. A friend has his VHF on his binnacle. He bought a small size radio and it works well also. I think the cockpit is the right place for the VHF. Many of the units are waterproof or submersible. The advantage of a seperate radio vs the RAM is that it provides a complete back up to your VHF at a little more than the cost of the RAM mike

VHF Binnacle Mount

I installed a remote speaker/mic on Always FOR SAIL's, H34,I drilled a hole just below the compass, dropped a weighted line down and fished it out of the bottom. The cable which came with my radio is only 20' long and I needed about 21.5' and ended up splicing two 20' cables (they are expensive). You may want to consider a separate radio for the cockpit and one for the nav station for redundancy.
