Just bought a recondioned 1972 Catalina 22. Where do you all mount the fixed VHF so that you can use it while at the tiller? Or, do you all just use handhelds? Thanks Joe McManus

A handheld

is probably your best bet. You don't want to keep a fixed mount VHF outside. The ones with the remote microphones are an option, so you mount just the microphone in the cockpit.

In cabin next to the companionway

In cabin next to the companionway is where mine is. It is on the starboard aft bulkhead. I can reach the mike and the controls without letting go of the tiller. It is mounted flat against the bulkhead facing the companionway. From in the cabin the display is kind of upside down and sideways, but when I poke my head in from the cockpit it is fine. I find it only slightly awkward to operate. The only drawback is that if I were to close the companionway in rough weather I couldn't get to it. I could leave the mike hanging out, but I couldn't change channels. If I were buying a new radio I would opt for one that had all of the controls on the mike. Either a remote mike or a regular one with a channel selector on the mike would do. I am not sure if they make the latter though. Another Pete

Hand-held VHF

On my Capri 18, a hand-held VHF radio meets my needs. If I ever need a bit more range, a mast-head antenna can easily be installed and used with the H-H. Most of my VHF use is 1 watt, short-range anyway.

VHF location

Joe; Your best bet is two radios. A mounted 25 watt set below with a masthead antennea for long range communication/emergencies, and a handheld with you in the cockpit for short range stuff. Radios are very cheap now and you want to be prepared.
