Two Questions: - If your vessel is equiped with radar must that radar be turned on when underway if visability is not restricted? The col regs state " Proper use of radar equipment must be made if fitted and operational ". What does " Proper use " mean? - If your radar is turned on will it " paint " a bigger picture on another ships radar even if you have a radar reflector?

Radar usage

I don't think it is necessary to have your radar on under conditions of good visibility. I do think it should be on though. Not necessarily for the purpose of seeing what else is out there. The more you have it on, the better you are at interpreting the returns. This is much easier to do when you can see what echos are returned by various objects. Using your radar is not as simple as some seem to think. The more you use it, watch it and play with it, the better you will be at reading what it tells you, when it becomes necessary.

Second question

Your second question could open a can of worms, as to the viability of radar reflectors. There are many variables here, but your best way to answer this question is to experiment with your own radar, and see what kind of returns you get from various boats, with the different kinds of reflectors.

There was a very good discussion

on this subject on the wooden boat forum. http://www.woodenboatvb.com/vbulletin/upload/showthread.php?t=70504

I like the home made...

Radar reflector idea. Think I'll make one and see how it works.

Brian D, I just tried cutting Aluminum foil on

a paper cutter. It works great except for one little thing. I stacked several layers together and cut them, thinking to just shake them apart. I can't even peel them apart. It seems like the cut edge has bonded the layers together. Probably need some paper between the layers of foil. I will probably try some aluminum sticky tape on some Tyvek and make a wind sock with the variety of foil sizes. Then I will need to find someone with radar to tell me how it works.

Ken, turning a radar on won't make your radar

cross section larger to another vessel. However, a radar antenna in your rigging will act as a radar reflector and will increase your radar cross section to another vessel. This happens whether the radar unit is turned on or off. Furthermore, the orientation of your antenna will have an affect on the amount of energy that gets reflected back to another vessel, but, this is splitting hairs in in my opinion.

Hey Ross...

Yeah, I tried that this evening with a paper cutter. It's actually fun to cut the strips then curl them. I see a rainy winter project on the horizon. Wait... We don't have a winter in SoCal. Sailing all year long. Meh! what the heck. This is going to be fun.

radar schmadar

If the equipment is installed and functional, radar should be turned on whenever it can provide additional information to the watchkeeper which will enable her to keep a proper lookout. Unfortunately, most recreational boaters who have radar, do not have the experience or training to properly use it. It's a good policy to leave it on even in great daylight conditions to learn how to adjust and interpret the images. At the very least, read the manual carefully and understand the use of all the adjustments. Get as much experience as possible so that when you really need it in fog or at night, it can help you. Modern low end radars have a lot of the software which was originally developed for military units and can do amazing things, like track multiple targets, warn of impending collision, etc.... but adjustments are still critical. So practice, practice.

CD's

I have heard that fastening CD's to the standard radar refletor will make quite a return... that will make your boat look like a battleship out there. Haven't tried that one out yet.
