Marine Radar.. I'm in the market for a radar/ chartplotter for my cat 320c. I was looking at the jrc 1800 combo radar+chartplotter- comes with 6.5" screen, 2kw, 24nm 18" dome..runs $1500.. Products put out by Raymarine, Furuno, simrad..2 to 3x's expensive..What's the deal- they also have similar specs- 6.5", 2kw, 24nm- (though some of the screens had a higher resolution). Is this a u get what u pay for lesson? Also- where is the best place to mount a dome- stern or mast? thx....

radar or no?

this is a hard one, but i just went through it, and budget is a major consideration. i picked the garmin 2010c because of its large screen and excellent blue charts, and decided to get a separate radar unit because the cost is not that much more and i want the redundancy of two systems. and, yes, you do get what you pay for. in rough conditions a big screen can be very important.

jrc 1800

Ray I have had a JRC 1800 for a season. I love it. I have the display mounted on a swing out bracket I got at WM so I can see it from the helm or use it below. I like the radar/chart plotter combination. Two separate units is okay for redundancy, but you have two displays etc to mount. I had a stainless pole fabricated for the stern quarter It holds the radome, GPS antenna, anchor light, and has space for a TV antenna if I need one. I also had him fabricate a swing arm crane on the pole to hoist my 9.9 Johnson OB. JRC doesn't have quite the advertising/quality/hype ? of Raymarine but it is an established outfit.

Tom.. can u have the radar display screen mounted in the helms navpod- while sailing- and remove and place in a gimble mount below when (staying below)? or do u have to choose? dont think the swing out disply would work here..thx ken

I asked my electronic guru this same question Ken - some time ago but I think he said it might be done but you'd have to have a pretty sophisticated switch box not to mention two power and radar "plugs" from JRC . Why don't you think the swing arm would work? In spite of what I say about using the swing arm it is pretty clear a high % of users mount their chartplotter / radar displays at the helm and are very happy with the setup. I just happen to prefer the security / safety of having the unit under cover of the dodger or in the cabin. Either way I am sure you will enjoy having a chartplotter/radar at your finger tips. Good luck. One other thought - if your cables were long enough you could put a gimbal mount at the helm and one down below and just move the unit from one to the other, but then you would have two cables in your companionway/cockpit to tripover.... sailing is compromise :)
