I have now sailed the waters around Florida for a few years and went up/down the east coast a couple of years ago but never really needed my radar until recently. We just got back from a trip to the Keys and one day had fog all day and another day had fog for a half day. A couple of months ago we went on a trip and had fog so thick the visibility was non existent. But with my HD radar I could see and tag boats in the area. On a couple of occasions I contacted boats heading my way to make sure they knew I was there. So to anyone thinking about coastal cruising I highly recommend you do not leave the dock without radar! Now if I could only see those crab pots on radar.....

I agree with you. This is this first boat I've had with radar and was expecting a much steeper learning curve. I was able to get onto it quickly. We found it very useful doing a night time Gulf Stream crossing to keep track of buddy boats and cruise ships. Also confirms your GPS position with a chart overlay. I was a bit surprised how useful it was. Before that I thought it was just a "nice to have".

I've had radar since 2003 and find it is one of the most useful things on a boat. If you are transiting the Tenn-Tim either to or from Mobile, it is essential. Many mornings I ran on radar for a good while in the fog. Also at night is is very helpful, but not essential. Coupled with my led GoLight, takes all the stress away.
