I already ran the cable from the helm to the out side bottom of the mast and as soon as the weather inproves I will go up the mast. Should I put the scanner just above the spreaders or just below.

Nick, calculate the height

Nick, there is a formula for the type and strength of a radar. The formula is to calculate the height above the water for the radar to be mounted to "see" properly. Read your directions carefully before you choose the spot. The height shouldn't be chosen just for "looks". It's a very important measurement.

Nick, I'm not sure exactly what the formula is that Paul is referencing. We mounted the radar on our 290 and our 356 just a little above the first set of spreaders. That is the advice I have consistently been given. We did use guards with both boats. There is a vertical beam angle that might affect your ability to see in very close if you get it mounted too high. We have not noticed any problem in that regard with the mount as indicated. I like my mast mount systems, but there are many here who prefer pole mounted radars. I can appreciate the arguments regarding both systems. I could not open your picture. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)

radar height

I agree with dan, just above the spreaders seems to work fine. what Paul's talking about is a formulato calculate the size of your dead zone based on the height of the antenna and the vetical beam angle--- tan(1/2 beam angle)=deadzone distance/height above water the other relevant equation is the horizon distance vs height, but that's a square root relationship-you don't gain much range as you go higher, but you lose on close in distance. another factor is the pulse timing-the close in reflections simply come back too fast for the radar to receive them. this distance varies from radar to radar, but maybe defines a 100 ft circle around the boat where you can't see anything. I'll post the other 2 equations when i get back home

Thanks everyone

I read the owners handbook for installing scanner up the mast and they just say close to the first spreader and not too high. I'll go just above the spreader, thanks again and don't understand the photo problem I'll try again.
