I am considering adding a Radar unit to my 1992 H28. I keep my boat in Maine and the fog can get pretty thick some times. I was hoping to get a small (12"?) radome and a monochrome display. Does anyone have any recommendations (pors and cons) and a rough idea of cost? What is your experience with the usefullness of a Radar? Thanks.

Worth the Expense
I first put one on a 32. It is only as ggod as your skill in using it, so it requires a lot of good-weather practice. JRC makes a small radome, the smallest I've seen. But, the Furuno is lightweight if somewhat larger as is the Raymarine. I like the user interface on the Furuno, but any of them will serve you fine. Unless you want to mast mount, Garhauer makes a nice pole for easy money. Rick D.

Go for the largest dome that you can afford and that's practical for your boat. The laws of physics are not nice to mess with.

Mounting Radar Unit
I'm curious how you plan to mount the unit you buy. I have the same 92 H28 and have been considering different options such as building an arch or using a pole mount. Both seem to have the most flexibility for other uses. I have a Raymarine 4Kw 24" radome but haven't mounted it yet.

Custom backstay mount
Here is what I did. Much less than commercial models. Completely made from thick wall 7/8 inch stailess stanchion tubing and fittings. Backstay bushing made from 2 1/2 inch delrin custom drilled for the tubing and backstay. Tim R.
