I have a Tartan 30 and have just purchased Furuno Radar which I plan to install on th mast. I need a 15 meter cable to go between the radome and the display. I would like to cut the cable where it comes out of the mast in the cabin to make it easier to step and unstep the mast every year. It would also mke it much easier since I would not have to "re-fish" the signal cable back through the cabin every year to get it to the display that will be in the cockpit. Is it posibble to cut this cable and put standard connectors on eiter end?? I know some cables for certain electrontinc can't be cut and splaced. If it can be cut do you have any suggestions on what connector to use. Is there anything I should be aware of if I cut this cable??? Thanks Mal Leichter

Tartan 30 great boat! I used to have one. We cut the cable and installed a junction box provided by a local marine electronics outfit for a Raytheon Radar unit.

Connector Block

Mal, my mast-mounted radar unit has a splice and joins the rest of the cable at the connector block. So it can be done. My advice? Talk to an installer for the proper way to fish the wires. Then hire him to do the actual cutting and joining of the wires at the connector. Have him show you exactly what must be done to disconnect/connect the radar. Radar connections can be troublesome to troubleshoot. That is what I'd do. Good Luck.

Junction Box

Mal, I installed a Furuno 1722C this last winter. I have a Catalina 36, so my run was quite a bit more. At the base of the mast I installed a junction box. It gets a little tight in there with all the wires. Also, the coax wire for the antenna feed is very small with only about 5 or 6 wires. The connection is very delicate. You need to check that one once in a while to make sure you have good contact. Otherwise the radar signal won't display. Good luck. Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560
