question We also are contemplating adding Radar next spring. I am looking at the 4 kw enclosed raymarine package to network with my existing raymarine instruments. My dock neighbor just installed the same package I am looking at. He said he read in the instructions about screen placement. I had planned on installing the screen on my edison pedistal. by purchasing the bent elbow tube so it would ride high and in easy view. Edison makes this elbow extension or new bar strickly for this purpose to add other instruments at the helm. However my dock mate said he read in the raymarine instructions that the radar screen had to be at least 3' from the compass, now mounted on our binical pedestal . My installation would place this new radar screen approx 18" away from the compass.... has anyone heard of this???..and can there be a correction in the compus diviation to allow for the radar so close???...My neighbor moved his to hang from his ridgid bimini...not an option for me. thanks Rob

I mounted my Furuno 1722C radar

the same way you are suggesting and I don't think it affects the compass. Its less than 18" inches away, probably a one foot. Besides when its on, I only use the heading information on the screen not the compass. If the unit packed up, I would turn it off and use the compass.

The only problem I have with mounting at the wheel

... is there are times where a crewperson can concentrate better on the screen and it is difficult to do that in the crowded space behind the wheel. I have the same problem with GPS mounting at the wheel especially when you are navigating some tricky area and have a good navigator that could help. I like a swing out arm into the companion way or bulkhead mounting. Some boats are just a disaster behind the wheel for more than one person. But then again if you are "it" ... that's another story. Location of radar screen

Once you've mounted the antenna, why not hook up the unmounted screen and place it in your first choice of locations. Turn it on and you'll know at once whether there is a problem. If there's no interference with the compass, there is no problem. Mount the screen. If there is interference with the compass, move the screen around until you find an appropriate spot for viewing with no compass interference. Then mount the screen.
