Hi, we have a small radar problem. When we start the system it goes through the normal warm up period then displays a good image. After about 3 or 4 minutes the screen shuts off. The only way to get the display to restart is to remove the small fuse from the rear of the unit, lick it (yeah, i know, weird) and reinstall it. The screen then goes through the entire warm up period again, displays a good image and shuts off again. The fuse does not blow, but licking it is the only thing that works. Any thoughts on what may be causing this? Is it user repairable or repairable at all? Thanks in advance.

corrosion

Hi Travis, Think your radar set might have a poor connection at the fuse. Suggest you clean the fuse and fuse holder with a "Q-TIP" (cotton swab). Try a dry swab and if that doesn't work - try an electrical contact cleaner (Radio Shack). Good Luck, Bob

Radar repair

Hi Travis - Bob sounds like he's on the right track with his corrossion prognosis. What make of radar is it? If it's Furuno, Raymarine, JRC or one of the large mfgs, there's a good chance it can be repaired. Check online for the nearest service center. Best, Trevor

Don, don't you just love it?! :)

And Travis, maybe licking your fuse is the same as turning the set off. Either way, you are shutting down and re-starting. I'm no expert but it sure sounds fixable. Look in the book. Call somebody.

did you try using a brand new fuse?

you should have a new extra anyway next disconnect at power source and clean the fuse holder both ends then try again

I'm not an electrician

So I have to ask. Why did you start licking the fuse? Is that in the owner's manual? You are right...weird. Mark

bad component

the time spent licking the fuze, allows the bad component in your radar to cool down. You need to take it in for repair. It sounds like as soon as it produces heat when radiating a component fails and the unit shuts down. Most likely a easy SHOP repair and not a owner repair.

Replace the fuse first

I have seen cheap fuses open when current is flowing, then close back up when the current stops flowing. They don't blow completely. I think the element just serperates from the connector. Anyway, try replacing the fuse and see what happens. Dave
