Radar on mast

I'm going to buy a new radar should I mount the radome on the mast or on a small mast on the stern? Some say that if I mount it on the mast the head sail can get hung up on it when tacking. Also I hear that for every pound on the mast you lose 20lb. off the keel.

Questus self-leveling

Check out the self-leveling mounts from Questus (BoatUS and others). They mount on your back stay and while they are expensive they are always parellel to the horizon.

Radar best on mast

I placed one on the mast of my 36 ft. with a guard installed with the mount. It does not come close to the sail. Believe it should be high up for best operation. Be careful about radar operating just overhead of humans due to the intense radiation energy. Obey the manufacturer's recommendations. Good luck.
