My father-in-law was feeling generous this Christmas and gave us the radar unit from his old boat. I would like to mount the radome on the backstay but these systems are very expensive. Actually more than the radar itself. Therefore I am looking for ideas about fabricating a mounting system for the backstay from anyone else who has radar. I am thinking a 6 or 7 foot 3/4 inch stainless pole running up the rear of the backstay attached to the chainplate and/or the pushpit with a bushing at the top on the wire to stabilize the pole. Then thru-bolting a bracket with a diagonal brace attached lower on the pole. BTW, my radar is a Furuno 1622 with 15" radome. Tim R

I think a RADAR mast on the stern would be better for you. It will take some special work to build a backstay mount.

Tower or pole at stern
Sounds like a lot of trouble with home made bachstay mount,why not a home made pole type set up at the stern I've seen a few on other boats at the marina's. Thats what I was looking to do on my boat,but have decided on a mast mounted radar dome,good luck on what ever you decide. nick

I bought a backstay mount.
As I recall, it was not all that expensive, or I wouldn't have bought it! The Chandlery carries them, and depending on the proximity to the topping lift, the radome can go forward of the backstay. Also, the ones in the chandlery are gimbled, so heel angle doesn't affect the range of the radome. ~ Happy sails to you ~

Deep pockets
Ed, your pockets are deffinately deeper than mine. The single backstay model is $1,100. Yours must be a double backstay model which goes for $500. Still alot of money. Tim

I priced them in 1990 at $1400+. I had an arch built for $1100.
