Radar installed just below the spreader at about 18ft above the deck. Thank god for mast steps. Whoever installed them has saved me a bunch of money so far! I was able to get the head installed all by myself in three trips up. Have a climbing harness and pretty good with rigging helped a lot. I was able to run the cable down the mast and through the water resistant wire chase at the base with room to spare. Fires it up and connected my IPad to it and boom, a radar signature. Next step is get out of the marina to get a usable signature. I have the radar connected to my Timezero app that overlays the signature on the chart pretty cool stuff.

Great stuff Mike.
Now I suggest you use it when it is sunny and visibility is excellent so you learn the types of response signals connected with visual signings of boats. Pretty soon you won’t need to look outside you’ll build a situational awareness based on the screen images. Until then using the radar while being able to see the other boats is skill building.

I got some highly needed boat time over the past couple days in quarantine and put some time on my new toys, radar and my CPT Autopilot. I have no regrets with both.
Question on radar........I notice I have a radar return off of my stern about 90% of the time about 800-1700ft. It’s very broken and diffused. Nothing there, I stopped looking after about the 5th time. Any ideas what could be causing it? Logic pints to something associated with the mast but it’s a assumption.

Mike. The image shows your antenna on the mast. You should have a blind spot of 5-10 degrees behind your antenna/ boat. Nothing should be seen or is real in that cone.
Suspect what your seeing is a ghost reflection.
When you adjust your gain does the image change or disappear?

This is a great example of why boat owners need to operate their electronics in clear daylight so that they can become familiar with the GUI (Graphical User Interface). With radar it is easy to chase ghosts.

On the other hand you might have had a sub following you It surfaced or stuck its periscope up while you were watching the radar and submerged when you turned to look at it. :yikes:
