Radar/GPS Interface

I'm in the process of installing a JRC 1500 radar on my boat. The radar has a pair of wires designed to accept a signal from a gps. I have an older (3 years plus) model Garmin handheld GPS which I've successfully interfaced with my laptop with a Garmin connector that works with the serial port on the laptop. My question is this: Can I feed the gps signal to both the laptop and the radar at the same time? If so, how? Thanks for your help. Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

Wiring

Your NMEA output from the GPS should drive two separate "listener" devices (lap-top and radar). You simply need to connect the GPS DATA OUT line to the radar and lap-top DATA IN lines, and provide a common ground. (You would probably have to cut in to the Garmin cable to do this.) I think if I was doing this I would build a small panel with a pair of DE-9 sockets (correct sex), one would take your existing Garmin cable, the other would allow you to plug in the laptop using a standard serial cable. The permanent radar connection would come off the rear of the panel. An expensive alternative would be to buy a NMEA expander from the on-line store on this site.

More on GPS wiring

I am actually about to do something similar. I have a Garmin 182 GPS mounted on the pedestal. I will wire the NMEA lines from the GPS (in and out) to a 9-pin DE-9 socket mounted on a panel at the nav station. This will allow me to plug in my lap-top at the nav station, using a standard serial cable for bi-directional communication with the GPS. I will also run the DATA OUT line from the socket to the NMEA IN terminals on a Raymarine ST-60 "Multi" instrument that I have mounted at the nav station.. The Multi acts as a NMEA to Seatalk translator as well as a display, which will allow me to drive the Raymarine autopilot from the Seatalk connection without a dedicated cable from the GPS.

I've Done It

Gary/Derek, I have a JRC 1000 which has an identical display unit to the 1500. I also have a Garmin 65 and feed radar, laptop and Autohelm from the Garmin. It all works perfectly. Interestingly I think Raytheon sold me short with their Course Computer (ST50 databus) as it does not appear to output all the data I need for the little data boxes on the radar screen, so I feed the radar direct from the GPS rather than from the autopilot NMEA out port. Please note that, as there is compass input this way, the radar uses the direction signal out of the GPS. All is well but it shows the TRACK actually made good rather than the ship's head. This is normally of little consequence - until you stop - when it is disconcerting to have your next waypoint shown as if you are pointing due north. It needs a little thinking about to see why this happens and it all sorts itself out as soon as you start moving. Have fun!

Hey, Derek!

"Electrically challenged" duo here. So, what's a "DE-9 socket" and where does one get them? Is "marine grade" and issue? We have a couple of delicate wiring jobs where we are looking for the right connector, and this might be it (??). Thanks. Carl and Jule s/v 'Syzygy'
