Racor

I have a 3YM30 Yanmar and it came stock with 110 filter up on engine
a racor filter after the fuel tank and what I did was add a racor 500 before
the rear racor right off the fuel tank and have never had a fuel problem.
The racor 500 uses a drop in filter one that is cheaper than others $10 and has easy to see water drain on bottom and easy quick to change and I think I use
30 micron filter.

The Annapolis Yanmar guy says do not use a 2 because it is to restrctive of the engine pumping ability and could starve the engine of fuel. If you have an electric pump on the tank end, then it will push through a 2. If I've been reading past posts correctly, any particulate smaller than a ten is not a problem for the diesel to "digest". Me, I'm using 10 for both filters. Why use a 30 that you KNOW will past dirt on down to the 10?

Yep, 30 then a ten. A pump and injectors will pass anything smaller than a ten. A 2 is just too "finicky ".

Racor

I guess your right on a lower Micron but once some one said a 10 micron
may restrict fuel to the pump and I think I did have a 10 & 20 micron but I
had the 30 sitting in my spare parts bag and last time I felt it was time to change filters I used the 30 micron.
My engine starts right up and is so smooth when it runs and doesn't ever
sound bad so I guess I am OK.
I do use jugs most times and use a funnel with fuel filter built into it and
I think that that helps keep most dirt out and yes have see dirt collecting in the bottom of my jugs but sooner or later the funnel filter will trap it and I am sure
that's why I don't mine using the 30 Micron and may go lower next time I change them.

Re: Racor

looks like a 10/10 for this install
agree that a 2 is just too fine

Thanks

I looked in the West book for what size the funnel filters would catch, but it only list a G.P.H. number. Perhaps somebody on the forum will know. My uneducated thought would be if the 30 traps fuel particulates, maybe the fuel source needs to be questioned? OR, does anyone know what filtration there is on the fuel pumps at the dock/station? Inquiring mind would like to know.

Not sure where today's "best deal" is, but I've done well ordering replacement Racor filter elements from this site.

There is this site. There is also Google. It continually amazes me that folks, when they get into boating subjects, forget Google (or your search engine of choice). I've found great deals on water heaters, etc., with a search engine.

Another Take on Micron Size

I am not saying the following is the correct way and in fact, my friend and contributor to this forum captnron, reminds me often that it is not the correct way.

My fuel system consists of a Racor with a 2 micron filter followed by an electric fuel pump and then a 10 micron secondary fuel filter. That's the way it was when I purchased the boat and that's the way it remains.

Logically speaking, a 2 micron filter followed by a 10 micron filter defeats the purpose of a dual filtration system. So why do I leave it that way? Because the Racor on my vessel is easy to get to and easy to change. On the other hand, my secondary requires 2 contortionists, four hands, bruised knuckles and plenty of profanity to change. So I let the Racor do most of the work but I check the bowl frequently and I change it when necessary.

While I did have some issues with my fuel system in the past it was remedied by replacing the 20 or so year old electric fuel pump with a new Facet Gold-Flo electric fuel pump. In my case the 2 micron Racor does not inhibit fuel flow and my 10 micron secondary, although I change it, is never dirty.
