I purchased a 1984 sailboat with a Racor 200SM fuel filter. The filter is mounted low... so I cannot see the filter bowl or drain fitting without a mirror (but can get my hands on it... limited purchase). As one looks up from the bottom of the filter... which way does that silver collar turn to drain sediment from filter (clockwise or counter-clockwise). I pretty much break anything I touch... and will need to use pliers to get things turning.

Racor

Most Racor's have a petcock at the bottom of the bowl and they operate like any valve; CCW to open, CW to close

Racor filter

I've got a Racor on my 84 Catalina 27 (with Universal diesel). I believe mine is also a 200SM. On mine, there is a plastic petcock at the bottom of the bowl. To drain it, turn the petcock counterclockwise (when looking up at the bowl). Turn clockwise to close it. Be careful if using pliers, as they might damage the petcock. The stainless ring holds the lid on the clear bowl. There is a hand knob on mine. (the whole thing is sort of like a fancy hose clamp). Turn the hand know ccw to loosen, cw to tighten. Removing the lid allows you to change the filter element. Good luck, Randy

Try to figure out...

...if it's upside down. You will need to unscrew accordingly, which is to say counterintuitively. You'll need big pliers regardless. Okay to nick up the canister, no one's looking.

NO to Pliers!

Sears wil sell you a pair of plastic & rubber 'strap' wrenches for about $10.00 that wrap around round objects and allow you to put some torque into turning them. Failing that look for any regular adjustable oil filter wrench; you can't replace the canisters and the new replacement is probably $130-150 or so.

problem solved

The only tool I could get down there were needle nose vice grips. Closing my eyes and feeling around I was able to loosen the petcock ring on the bottom of the filter. .. however the whole fitting was spinning out. Plan "B"... I screwed the fitting back in... took the top and filter off... pumped the filter bowl out with a hand pump... spun the fitting out from the bottom... loosened the petcock from the fitting as it was bound closed... re-installed... put filter back in... topped of with diesel... and it fired right up not missing a beat. By the looks of what came out of there.. (black muck) it probably wasn't drained for years. That problem solved... for the moment, Stimpy
