Seadaddler, the best thing you should do is learn to trim the sails you have the best you can. If you aren't spot on, you aren't going as fast as you can. Then, it just takes practice, and being able to read shifts and holes and such, and strategy to blanket others blah blah blah.

Don Guillette's sail trim book http://shop.sailboatowners.com/prod.php?51998/Sail Trim Users Guide and flash cards are a great place to start.

Nick, if you spent the money for new sails, WFPHRF would penalize you In an attempt to level the playing field. Practice, practice, practice.

Cruising class...

In addition to trim, practice, and techniques.

1) CLEAN YOUR BOTTOM! I destroyed competition in light wind because other racers were too lazy or incapable of diving in and rubbing her belly. A stiff brush will do, mask and fins, you'll be surprised how a hairy bottom slows her down. Go down on her, use a stick to extend brush to reach down low.

As you note, your rolling mainsail is MUCH smaller than a regular main, as it has no roach at all. Check with your PHRF board, most give time credits for rolling sails in cruiser classes.

Tips, because your boat is under-canvased:

1) Keep it LIGHT. Take off as much as you can stand when racing.

2) Don't pinch. Crack off a degree and go for boatspeed.

3) Think about gaining advantage down wind. You boat will perform poorly in JAM (Jib & Main) class because boat's sails are so small. Think about getting a asym, and/or a Code-style reaching sail.
