We are racing in a cruising fleet with lots of other types of boats. None of the boats in our mixed class use spinnakers. We have a 150 jib. We are doing well, but haven't won a race yet (2nds and 3rds). It is very exciting and I want to win!! I am thinking raking the mainsail more might help. Any suggestions? tada

Racing an O'day

There are several things you can do to improve performance. A new main with a larger roach for light air, folding prop, backstay adjuster, and as you say tightening the backstay to remove headstay sag. A backstay adjuster would be a better choice though because although the tightening of the backstay will improve closehauled performance it will have the opposite effect downwind.Also adjustable genoa cars will help.

Hi Tada - Sure, there are things you could do to your boat to increase performance, but the best thing you can do is educate the sailor! If you haven't already, check out Don Guilette's Sail Trim charts and his book, available right here on this site (see Related link below).
