We are doing a make up of a 3 race series which actually started in late June. In the interim, a skipper has gotten a new boat. It is a J95 so we know what its rating will be and give the new boat a temp until the paperwork is done. Question is, can we score him using one boat for 2 of the races and another boat in the 3rd race?

You could do pretty much anything BUT as far as i know you do need to do a series in the same boat

A crashed J24 for another J24 should be OK but changing to a J29 would not fly around here

On the other hand IF nobody there minds i see no problem

Different boats, different ratings, two boats in the same series. He gets points for a 2 out of 3 and a 1 out of 3 entry in our fleet.

I think the answer to your question is "no". He has to finish the series in the boat he started. If he buys a new boat, then the next series he can start fresh, but you cannot mix two boats under one divisional trophy. You would have to refer to the by-laws of your particular club to see how this is addressed, if addressed. And see how fees are applied - to the owner, family or to the boat? In other words, if he kept the first boat and raced both of them in different series, does your club rules say he has to pay a double fee or not? If your by-laws do not cover such things, then maybe time to make a by-law change so you re covered.

Hey guys, it isn't stated that the new boat shifted him from SPINNaker to non-spinnaker or from NS Fleet 1 to NS Fleet 2. And if you look at the reason why we have PHRF, it is to level the playing field across a fleet of non-equal hulls.

So, unless there is a RULE (international, national, local) that says otherwise, it is the CAPTAIN that races and the hull that has a handicap (or is that backwards? Hmm, I'll have to ask my friends.)

Is anyone implying that a specific boat and PHRF for that make and model gives an unfair advantage? I think not.

One problem is that the program we use to score races does it by boat name - not by skipper.

If a boat changes skippers in the middle of a series, does not that boat maintain its position?

I go with this thought also.


Here is my logic. Let's assume you enter a 2 day 5 race regatta and wind up in the PHRF Handicap Fleet. Day one you sail a J24. Day 2 you show up and want to sail a Catalina 22. Think that will fly?

I think you dance with and go home with the one that "brung ya"! Or, you are scored as having entered 2 separate and distinct entries in the series.

Thanks for the input and it has helped reach a decision. He can't change boats in the middle of the series. What if i owned two boats - one a heavy air and the other a light air? Today's race I will use the light air boat, but when the next week comes around and conditions change, then I will use my heavy air boat. This is not in the spirit of of what club racing is all about.
